How Does IPL Work

A IPL, or “Photofacial,” is a 30-minute procedure in which Intense pulses of light are used to penetrate deep into the Skin. IPL then causes blood vessels below the epidermis to constrict reducing redness and promote collagen production – achieving glowing, clearer skin tone. The procedure involves minimal discomfort, redness and swelling that might occur after treatment, disappears shortly. Most benefits of an IPL Photofacial occur gradually in the weeks following treatment.

What To Expect During Treatment

Your skincare specialist will first cleanse your skin on the area to be treated and then a cool gel is applied. The laser handpiece emits pulses of intense bright white light (ie.intense pulsed light) against the skin which dissipates hyperpigmentation and breaks up small blood vessels that lie just below the skin. Some patients describe it as a sensation of a mild rubber band. The sunspots should darken to the color of coffee grind and other spots will just lighten naturally over next few weeks as well.

Any Downtime After IPL

The recovery time from an IPL Photofacial is normally very short, as there is very little damage done to the skin during treatment. The side effects of IPL treatment dissipate within a few hours for many patients. For some patients, however, the redness or dark spots may take a few weeks to fade. You can camouflage the redness or dark spots easily with a medium coverage makeup. The most important things to remember following IPL treatment is to avoid direct sun and to wear plenty of sunblock for at least several weeks.

After Care And Recovery

We will ask that you continue to keep the treated area moist. Do not pick peel or exfoliate the treatment area. Let the area heal on its own. You can wear makeup if needed to conceal but keeping the skin moist when not wearing makeup will expedite the healing process. Cover the treated area if you are planning on being in the sun immediately after your treatment with a SPF of 30 or higher. We ask that you refrain from hot showers and swimming pools for a week following treatment.
